What the Library Offers Students
The Library Earl Haig is your space for studying, group work, and accessing technology and resources. Whether you need a quiet spot to read, a table for a project group, or a computer and printer for an assignment, the library is set up to support you. This page summarizes the main student resources and how to use them.
Study Space and Quiet Areas
The library has areas for quiet, independent study as well as spaces where low conversation is allowed for group work. When you enter, check the signs or ask staff which zones are for silent study and which allow discussion. Respecting these zones helps everyone focus and collaborate when they need to.
Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis during opening hours. During busy times (e.g. exam periods or project deadlines), come early if you need a specific spot. Bags and belongings should be kept with you; the library is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
Group Work and Bookable Space
For group projects and discussions, the library offers space that can be booked in advance. Booking ensures your group has a table or room for a set time. Ask at the library desk or look for booking information on the school portal. Bring your group on time and leave the space tidy when you are done.
Group work often goes hand in hand with research. Use the digital collections and academic support services to find and cite sources. If your project involves primary sources or deeper research, the Research Archive may have useful material.
Computers and Technology
Computers in the library are for school work: research, writing, and accessing online resources. You can use them to search the catalogue and databases, work on documents, and prepare presentations. School acceptable-use policies apply; use the equipment responsibly and log off when you leave.
If you have your own device, you can often connect to the school network and use the same digital resources from your laptop or tablet. Ask at the desk or at the school’s IT support if you have trouble connecting.
Printing and Scanning
Printing and scanning are available in the library. There may be limits on how many pages you can print per day or per month, and there may be a cost per page depending on school policy. Ask at the desk for the current rules and how to pay or use your quota. When printing, please be mindful of the environment and print only what you need.
Scanning is useful for turning handouts or book pages into PDFs. Staff can show you how to use the scanner if it is your first time.
Homework Help and Getting Support
The library does not replace your teacher or tutor, but we can help you find resources, plan your research, and cite your work. For subject-specific homework questions, your teacher is the first point of contact; for “how do I find this?” or “how do I cite this?”, the library is here. Drop in during opening hours or book a short slot if you need focused help.
