Events & Workshops

Literacy events, author visits, and skills sessions throughout the year.

What Happens at the Library

Library Earl Haig runs events and workshops that support reading, research, and digital skills. From book clubs and author visits to sessions on how to use databases and cite sources, there is something for different interests and grade levels. Events are announced in the library, on the school website, and through teacher and school channels. This page gives an overview of the types of activities we offer and how you can take part.

Book Clubs and Reading Programs

Book clubs and reading challenges run at various times during the year. They give you a chance to discuss books with peers and sometimes with staff, and to discover new titles. Some programs are tied to reading programs that the library promotes school-wide. If you enjoy reading and want to share that with others, ask at the library when the next club or challenge starts and how to join.

No matter what you like to read—fiction, nonfiction, graphic novels—there is likely a space for it. The library can also suggest reads based on your interests and reading level.

Author Visits and Talks

When possible, the library arranges author visits or virtual talks. Authors may read from their work, answer questions, and talk about how they write and get published. These events bring the world of books to life and can inspire your own reading and writing. Dates and booking details are shared through the school; spaces may be limited, so sign up when announcements go out.

Research and Citation Workshops

Workshops on research skills and citation help you use the digital collections effectively and cite sources correctly. Sessions might cover choosing a topic, searching databases, evaluating sources, or using MLA or APA style. They are useful whether you are new to research or preparing for a major project. Schedule and sign-up are posted in the library and on the school portal; you can also get one-to-one help through Academic Support.

Digital and Media Literacy

Some workshops focus on digital and media literacy: how to tell reliable information from misinformation, how to use online tools safely, and how to create and share content responsibly. These skills matter in every subject and in life outside school. If this topic interests you or is part of your course, look for sessions that the library or school runs during the year.

How to Stay Updated

Event dates and sign-up details change each term. To stay updated, check the notices in the library, the school website and portal, and listen for announcements in class or over the school system. For a summary of ongoing reading initiatives, see Reading Programs. If you have an idea for an event or workshop, the library is open to suggestions—drop in or send a message through your teacher.
